Microneedling

Micro-needles that induce new collagen to improve texture, pores, marks and firmness, with no heat and no time off work

  • 45-60 minutes

About the treatment

What does it involve?

Microneedling is a collagen induction therapy. The skin is covered with a head of sterile microneedles that create thousands of micro-punctures at a controlled depth. The skin interprets that stimulus as a repair to be done and puts the fibroblasts to work: new collagen and elastin, better organised than the old.

The difference from other technologies lies in the mechanism: here the stimulus is mechanical, not thermal. The tissue is not heated and nothing is burnt. That makes it a comfortable option for skin that does not take heat well and for darker skin tones, where a thermal stimulus calls for more caution.

Collagen induction Mechanical stimulus, no heat Adjustable depth

The depth is adjusted area by area: shallower on the forehead, nose and eye contour, deeper on the cheeks or in areas with marks. Within the same face the whole map is not worked the same way, and much of the result lies there.

In men it is used above all for skin with an uneven surface: open pores on cheeks and nose, old acne marks, skin that has become lax in the middle third and that coarse look left by years of shaving and of sun without protection.

Before the first session we do a skin assessment: phototype, thickness, sensitivity, active flare-ups, medication and what you have done before. If your case calls for another technique or calls for waiting, we tell you.

What does it involve?

What does microneedling work on?

It is a skin quality treatment: it acts on the surface and the density, not on volume or on bacteria.

What it works well on

  • Coarse, uneven texture
  • Open pores on cheeks and nose
  • Superficial acne marks and scars
  • Mild loss of density and firmness
  • Dull skin with no smoothness
  • Fine lines of the middle third and the eye contour
  • Small scars of another origin
  • Stretch marks and marks on the body

Common reasons for consultation

  • Skin that looks rough up close and in flash photos
  • Pores that show more with the years
  • Marks from acne that has already passed
  • A feeling that the skin has lost thickness
  • Having tried only skincare products and got halfway there
  • Wanting to improve the skin without heat-based treatments

Microneedling, fractional laser or radiofrequency: which is yours?

  • Microneedling

    Stimulus: mechanical, microneedles, no heat

Its ground: texture, pores, superficial marks, density

Recovery: redness for 24-48 hours and fine peeling

  • Fractional laser

    Stimulus: thermal, microcolumns of energy

Its ground: marked acne scars and deep skin renewal

Recovery: more visible and longer depending on the level

  • Radiofrequency

Stimulus: deep heat, without breaking the surface

Its ground: firmness and tightening, without touching the surface texture

Recovery: none, you leave as you came in

What is the session like?

  1. Skin assessment

We review phototype, thickness, marks, active flare-ups and medication. The working depth comes out of that.

  2. Cleansing and disinfection

Oil and residue are removed and the whole area is disinfected. It is a sterile procedure.

  3. Topical anaesthetic

Anaesthetic cream is applied and left to work for about 20-30 minutes. It is the part of the appointment that takes the longest.

  4. Passes of the microneedles by area

The face is covered sector by sector with a sterile single-use head, adjusting the depth in each one.

  5. Actives and final soothing

With the skin receptive, moisturising and repairing actives are applied and the area is soothed.

  6. Session plan

The usual is 3 to 6 sessions 4-6 weeks apart. For acne marks the upper end of that range is usually needed.

  7. Review and maintenance

The result is assessed at the end of the plan and, if appropriate, one or two booster sessions a year.

What it achieves

  • Smoother skin to the touch and to the eye
  • Less visible pores
  • Superficial acne marks smoothed out
  • More density and firmness in the middle third
  • Better tone and overall radiance
  • Fine lines less marked
  • Better absorption of your daily skincare
  • No heat and no operating theatre
  • Compatible with almost all skin phototypes

Care before and after

Before the session

  • Stop retinoids, acids and exfoliants 5-7 days beforehand
  • Do not expose yourself to the sun or come with sunburnt skin in the days beforehand
  • Shave the day before, not on the day itself
  • Tell us about your medication, allergies and any history of cold sores or keloids
  • Tell us if you have taken oral isotretinoin: a period has to pass since the last dose
  • Do not come with an inflamed acne flare-up or a wound in the area

After the session

  • Do not touch your face with unwashed hands for the first few hours
  • No make-up or perfumed balms for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid intense exercise, sauna, swimming pools and heat for 48-72 hours
  • Avoid shaving for 2-3 days and then go back with a new blade
  • SPF 50+ sun protection daily and avoid direct sun for 7-10 days
  • Do not go back to retinol, acids or exfoliants until 5-7 days have passed
  • Moisturise and do not pull off the peeling skin by hand

What is to be expected is redness similar to mild sunburn for 24-48 hours, some swelling on the first day, a feeling of tightness and a fine peeling between the second and the fourth day. It is part of the process. If you feel increasing pain, pus or redness that is getting worse, get in touch with us.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions do I need and how often?

The usual is between 3 and 6 sessions 4-6 weeks apart. For texture and pores the lower end is usually enough; for acne marks the upper end is usually proposed. After that, one or two maintenance sessions a year.

Does it hurt?

With the anaesthetic cream it is well tolerated. You feel vibration and heat in the finer areas, such as the forehead or the eye contour. The discomfort does not continue once it is over.

How many days will it show?

The marked redness lasts between 24 and 48 hours. Between the second and the fourth day a fine peeling usually appears. It requires no time off, but if you have something important on it is worth leaving two or three days' margin.

How is it different from the fractional laser?

Microneedling stimulates with needles and without heat; the laser works with thermal energy. For depressed, marked scars the laser is usually more effective, and for that case we have a specific treatment for acne scars and marks. Microneedling wins with darker skin and when the objective is texture, pores and density.

Does it work if I have acne right now?

Not on active lesions: the flare-up has to be controlled first, because passing needles over inflamed skin can make it worse. First the acne is stabilised and then the marks it leaves are worked on.

Can I do it in summer?

You can, but it calls for discipline: no sun exposure in the following days and high protection daily. If you are going to be at the beach or the pool, it is more sensible to plan it for months with less sun.

When are the results visible?

The skin looks more radiant and smoother in the first week, but the real change comes with the new collagen: it is noticeable from the third or fourth week and keeps improving during the months following the plan.

Can it be combined with other treatments?

Yes, and it is often alternated with peels or with firming treatments. What is not done is overlapping it on the same day with another technique that breaks the skin barrier. The order and the timings are defined at the assessment.

Who should not have it done?

It is not indicated with an infection or an active cold sore in the area, a dermatitis flare-up, wounds, a history of keloids, clotting disorders, recent treatment with oral isotretinoin or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is reviewed case by case at the assessment.

It works on the quality of your skin

We assess your skin, tell you how many sessions it makes sense to propose and whether another technique suits you better.
